Sharana Sangama, a get together
function of Veerashaiva community of Sydney was organised by Basava Samithi of Australasia.Inc Sydney
chapter

This was a special occasion and a rare opportunity for the Sydney lingayats to meet and honour
the visiting Indian dignitary. The Hon. Minister for Kannada and Culture, Smt Rani Satish,
Karnataka Government, India, was the guest. The function started with a prayer from children.
President Sri: Onkarswamy Goppenahalli introduced the guest to the audience.
Trustee Sri: Rajasekaraiah read and presented the “Sanmana Patra” the felicitation certificate to
Smt Rani Satish.
Smt Rani Satish addressed to the audience stressed the need for preserving the culture
and pass on the values to the younger generation. She spoke about the Vachana Sahitya and
teachings of Sri Basaveshwara and Shiva Sharanas of 12th century. She explained how,
one can find peace and solace from vachanas for the difficulties faced in social, political
and family environments.

The minister also outlined about the projects and programs undertaken by the Karnataka Govt.
to collect and publish the Vachana Sahitya and Das Sahitya. Vachanas are now translated and
published in Hindi and English in print and also published electronically in CD form.
In near future these will be available on the internet as well.
Smt: Rani Satish mesmerized the audience by explaining how Sri Basaveshwara in 12th century
itself brought into practice the present days policies such as “Equal Opportunity”
and “Anti-discrimination”. She praised the audience for practicing the “Kayakave Kailasa”
(Work is Worship).
On behalf of Basava Samithi Smt Ratna Hemanth presented a memento to Smt Rani Satish.
The evening was memorable one as the members felt they were in their motherland India.
Vice President Sri Vijayakumar Halagali thanked the Guest and members of the community for making
time to attend the function on Friday night. The day’s program ended with dinner.
