Basava Jayanti Report 2003 |
Basava Jayanti, the birth anniversary of Sri Jagajyoti Basaveshwara was celebrated at a function in
Liverpool, on 17th May 2003. The function was organised by Basava Samithi of Australasia Inc.
(BSOA) Sydney. The aim of this function is to preserve, spread and pass on the teachings of
Sri Basaveshwara and many other Shivasharanas, to the younger generation.

Lord Basaveshwara a saint of 12th century fought for the human rights and equality for women
and the Shudras (untouchables). As a minister in King Bijjala’s court, he brought about social
changes such as inter-caste marriages. He preached about equal rights to all, irrespective
of the caste, creed and the profession. Sri Basaveshwara revolutionized the caste-ridden
society by professing the theory of “ Work is Worship”. He also organized the convention of
scholars the “ Anubhava Mantapa”, where the “Shiva Sharanas” from all walks of life participated.
The collection of Vachanas presented at this convention is an invaluable treasure for all
the future generations.The function commenced with the welcome address by Sri Suresh Bangalore,
Secretary BSOA. The proceedings were conducted by Smt: Rajani Bharat and Vinayak Orekondy.

A group of children presented, a small drama based on the life of Sri Basaveshwara,
Mrs. Ambika Prasad directed this play. A group dance Baagyada Belegaara by children,
directed by Smt: Ratna Hemanth was well received by the audience Vachanas were sung by
Smt: Pushpa Jagadish and Smt: Aparna Nagashayana.

Sri: K.C. Rajasekaraiah paid respect to Lord Basaveshwara and explained briefly the meaning of vachanas.
BSOA president Sri: Onkarswamy traced the history of the formation and growth of Basava Samithi in
Asia-Pacific region. He also presented the plan for the next year’s Basava Jayanti function,
which will be celebrated as the first Veerashaiva Convention in southern hemisphere.
Vice-President Sri: Vijayakumar Halagali honoured the people responsible for making the Basava Jayanti
celebrations a success.
Sri: Somashekarappa presented vote of thanks to one and all and invited the audience for the next
year’s function.
The celebrations were concluded with a Pooja to Sri: Basaveshwara and Dinner.
