Basava Jayanthi Celebrations 2004

New Zealand Chapter of BSOA celebrated Basava Jayanthi on 17/4/04 at Mount Roskill War Memorial hall from 10.00 AM to 5.00 PM.

Sri. Sri. Shivamurthy Shivachraya Swamiji and Dr. Siddaiah of Sirigeri Mutt Karnataka, were the chief guests for the function.

An open invitation was extended to the wider community of Kannada Koota members and some members from different Indian communities from Auckland. Around 200 participants had attended the function.

The function started with a vachana prayer "KaLabEda KolabEda" from group of children led by Prof. Vamanamurthy. The master of ceremony for the function were Sushma and Anuksha.

Prof. Vamanamurthy, the Patron of BSOAA, New Zealand Chapter welcomed the gathering. Mr. Nagaprasanna, Secretary for the Chapter presented a brief report on the activities for the year 2003 of the chapter.

Many young children and elders of the chapter performed a skit "Kettithu kalyana" written by Dr M. M. Kalburgi, Ex-Vice Chancellor of Kannada University, Hampi, Karnataka. Vinay Angadi gave a stunning performance in the role of 'balabasava'. The skit had incorporated vachanas, sang by accomplished artists of the chapter. Rudresh, Siddesh, Malakappa, Prakash, Anup, Vinay, Pooja, Akanksha, Sowmya, Vadiraj, Sneha, Rishija, Rajkumar Salimath, Lingappa Kalburgi, Pallavi, Pavitra, Pai, Sheela Shankar, Praveen, Sharmila, Aishwarya participated in the skit.

Ratna Vamanamurthy, Diwakar, Anupama, Vaishnavi, Srikanth Kolli, Mangala Prabhakar, Chaitra, Shruthi, Sridhar recited vachanas during the skit.

Dr. Lingappa Kalburgi, President of the New Zealand Chapter introduced Sri. Sri. Swamiji to the public. Sri. Sri. Swamiji addressed the gathering. The speech by Swamiji was the high light of the function where all the audience were impressed by the provoking thoughts. Swamiji appreciated the efforts of staging a skit with limited resources available in this country. At the end of the programme, Swamiji demonstrated the software "Vachana Samputa" developed by his holiness.

Srikanth Kolli presented the vote of thanks. The function ended with delicious lunch.

A get together was arranged in the evenings, during the stay of Swamiji at different places, which was very educative to the children and very thought full discussion to the elders. A wider Kannada community liked Swamiji’s speech and mixing with every one. With his experience of four days stay, he expressed that this was the community Basavanna wanted to build in the 12th century.
